6.11 NAVSEA approval and direction. Deviations from specified materials, procedures, and requirements and
selection of specific alternative materials and procedures require NAVSEA approval or direction. Requests should
include supporting documentation.
6.12 Definitions.
6.12.1 Driver. An LED driver is a power source that uses ship s power as an input and adjusts the output
voltage and current to LEDs. A driver can range from as simple to a resistor to as complex as a constant current
power supply.
6.12.2 Excessive corrosion. Excessive corrosion is defined as that which interferes with the electrical or
mechanical performance or, in the case of plated metals, corrosion which has passed through the plating and
attacked the base metal.
6.12.3 Leakage current. Leakage current is defined as the peak value of current flowing through the connection
when any line of the power source is connected to the frame of the fixture for test purposes with fixture operating.
6.12.4 Solid state lighting. Solid state lighting (SSL) utilizes Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), Organic Light
Emitting Diodes (OLEDs), or Polymer Light Emitting Diodes (PLEDs) as sources of illumination rather than
electrical filaments or gas. The term "solid state" refers to light emitted from a block of solid semiconductor
compared to a glass sphere or tube. The physical design of SSL systems provides a greater resistance to shock and
vibration, significantly increasing the luminaires rated life.
6.12.5 Special tools. Special tools are defined as those tools not listed in the Federal Supply Catalog. Copies
of this catalog may be consulted in the office of the Defense Contract Management Area Operations (DCMAO).
6.12.6 Standard stock parts. Standard stock is defined as material listed in the Federal Supply Catalog and
includes such items as globes, lenses, roundels, lamps, lampholders, cable, cord, wire, bolts, screws, nuts, and
washers.
6.13 Subject term (key word) listing.
