6. NOTES
(This section contains information of a general or explanatory nature that may be helpful, but is not mandatory.)
6.1 Intended use. Fixtures designed and manufactured to this specification and the associated specification
sheets are intended for use in a naval shipboard environment, both interior and exterior of the ship s structure, to
provide light during both normal and emergency conditions. The fixtures are able to perform in high temperatures,
after shock events, under constant vibration, and in casualty situations. The extensive electrical performance testing
ensures the electromagnetic radiation of current and future fixture designs will not adversely interfere with the
advanced communications and combat systems employed on multiple platforms.
6.1.1 Class 1 fixtures. Class 1 fixtures and lights are intended for use in detail lighting on board ship.
Examples of such applications, among others, are mirror and berth illumination, desk lighting, gaugeboard, and spot
illumination.
6.1.2 Class 2 fixtures. Class 2 fixtures and lights are intended for use in general illumination on board ship.
Fixtures and lights for general white illumination are also used for red or blue illumination by the use of proper
filters inserted either in the lighting fixtures or over the fluorescent lamps.
6.1.3 Overhead standard mount fixtures. Overhead standard mounted fixtures and lights are intended to be
mounted on the overhead by standard shock mounts.
6.1.4 Overhead flush mounted fixtures. Overhead flush mounted fixtures and lights are intended to be flush
mounted in areas where sheathing is employed in the overhead.
6.1.5 Explosionproof fixtures. Explosionproof fixtures and lights are intended for use in areas where explosive
atmospheres exist. Examples of such applications are fuel, paint, and hazardous material storage areas.
6.2 Acquisition requirements. Acquisition documents should specify the following:
